With the emphasis upon atmosphere rather than authenticity, Dennis Severs furnished, decorated and equipped the place to appear exactly as it might be were a visitor to wander in upon the imaginary family while they were momentarily absent but with everything just as if they had but slipped out: fires lit, candles burning, meals half-eaten, books and embroidery flung down, not to mention the sounds and smells of Georgian life too.
