The very old-fashioned cockpit of a very early-model Boeing 727 built in 1964. Yes, it is the Flight Engineer seat between me and the co-pilot seat.
Flying for United Airlines from 1964 until 1991, this aircraft landed at downtown Chicago's Meigs Field in 1993 to be donated to Museum of Science and Industry as an exhibit, as seen here.
Aircraft is also named after Captain Norwood, one of the first African-American pilots to be a captain at a major airline. United Airlines led the way in providing opportunities for ethnic minority and women pilots.
The aircraft model can be stated as, Boeing 727-22 (no submodel, "22" refers to Boeing's customer code for United Airlines), Boeing 727-100 (initial submodel), or Boeing 727-122 (initial submodel with the United customer code). United was the launch customer of the 727 (though Eastern beat United to first revenue flight), and continued to fly later variants of the 727 until 2001. At its peak in the 1980s, the United 727 fleet numbered over 200. Had it not been for the post-9/11 air travel slump, United would have kept the 727 fleet in service - numbering 75 as late as mid-2001 - until 2005 (!) while waiting for the replacement A320s to join the fleet. (Those additional A320s were eventually deferred and canceled.) The 727 was the last aircraft in the United fleet to require a flight engineer.
The Boeing 727 production totaled 1,832 aircraft until the end in 1984, of which this is the seventeenth. The 727 was the best-selling airliner in history until being surpassed by the 737 (after a redesign) in the early 1990s, and even today remains the third-best-selling airliner in history, the Airbus A320 family being the only other model to pass the 727's production numbers.
