Object history
Deutsch: Das vom Maler und Grafiker (Er war kein Heraldiker.) Gustav Bernhard Rüschoff entworfene Wappen des Landkreises Neuwied wurde am 14. Juli 1927 vom preußischen Staatsministerium verliehen und war damit eines der ersten Landkreiswappen Preußens. Die drei Wappensymbole beziehen sich auf die bis 1803 bzw. 1806 im Kreisgebiet bestehenden Territorialherrschaften; der Pfau steht für die Grafschaft Wied, das schwarze Kreuz für Kurköln und das rote Kreuz für Kurtrier. Hier wird in eindeutig gegen heraldische Farbregeln verstoßen, die besagen dass die Metalle Gold und Silber nicht aneinandergrenzen dürfen.
English: The arms were granted on July 14, 1927. The two crosses in the arms are derived from the arms of the Electorate of Cologne (sable) and Electorate of Trier (gules). Both electorates had many possessions in the district. The peacock is taken from the arms of the Counts of Wied (since 1784 Princes of Wied-Neuwied), who were the most important local noble family for many centuries.
